The FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, conveyed his „heartfelt condolences” to the family and friends of the footballer Juan Izquierdo after his passing at the age of only 27 due to „cardiorespiratory and neurological complications,” according to EFE.
„I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo. On behalf of FIFA and the entire football community, I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends, the Uruguayan Football Federation, Nacional Montevideo club, and everyone in CONMEBOL,” said Infantino on Instagram.
Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo passed away on Tuesday, five days after suffering a cardiac crisis during a match in Sao Paulo, Brazil, announced Nacional Montevideo club.
„With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” said the Uruguayan club on X social media platform.
The 27-year-old defender collapsed on the field of Morumbi arena in Sao Paulo, in the 84th minute of the return leg match in the Copa Libertadores round of 16, following a cardiac crisis.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Brazilian metropolis, and doctors stated that the footballer suffered „a cardiac arrest of undetermined origin, secondary to an arrhythmia.”
Following this incident, all competitions were suspended in Uruguay.
